Are health departments tweeting to the choir?

Using social media to spread information is on the rise in local health departments. But a new study, led by Jenine K. Harris, PhD, of the Brown School, finds that Twitter accounts are followed more by organizations than individuals and may not be reaching the intended audience.

What’s so hard about counting craters?

The journal Icarus published a study this month that compared lunar crater counts by eight professionals with crowdsourced counts by volunteers. The professional crater counts varied by as much as a factor of two. Two such professionals, both planetary scientists at WUSTL, explain why they weren’t surprised.

Imbalanced hearing is more than a mild disability

Asymmetric hearing is a difference between the two ears’ ability to detect and process sound. New studies indicate that people with asymmetric hearing have greater communication difficulties than assumed. Researchers led by Jill B. Firszt, PhD, have received a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the effects of such hearing loss.

Diversity grants awarded for 10 projects

Diversity and Inclusion Grants totaling nearly $112,000 were awarded to 10 projects designed to strengthen and promote diversity on campus. They range from anti-bias workshops for campus police to an internship program at the Kemper Art Museum.
